Coffee Grinders

My latest obsession is electricity-free gadgets that will still work in the event of an apocalypse and utter destruction of the electricity grid. In the event the apocalypse should come in 2012 and I survive, I think I should be at my most alert state in order to determine how best to survive. To achieve this, I will need caffeine.

Now, I’m not a coffee drinker – my caffeine source of choice is tea. But my girlfriend is a coffee drinker. And when we survive the apocalypse, I want her to be alert and non-cranky as well (Is there anything worse than waking up in a nuclear winter with a cranky girlfriend? Probably not).

So, I’ve been checking out manual coffee grinders. The tried and true box grinders and hoppers (such as the Zassenhaus walnut closed hopper above) are cute, but not really my style. For those of you who like the vintage look for yourselves, this site seems to have a regular selection of vintage coffee hand mills.

A Taste

I have the alcohol tolerance of a five-year-old. There are several unfortunate things about this, but one of the most unfortunate is that I tend to stick with what I know I like, since I know I can really only manage one glass. These tasting packages from Brixr might be the perfect way for me to expand my horizons.

It certainly isn’t for oenophiles, but I love the idea of wine in a vial. It seems to be a relatively new concept, but hopefully one that will catch on. I love the packaging from this French company WineSide.

Let’s make a tiny toast to tiny wines, shall we?

Itty Bitty Pies

I’m not a huge dessert fan, but every once in a while I get on a kick and need my sweet tooth satisfied. I think these little guys would be perfect to:

a) keep on hand and ready to go when my sweet tooth gets a hankerin’
b) keep me from eating an entire pie in one sitting

They are super adorable single-serving pies. And so few steps:

1) make the dough
2) put it in the container with the filling
3) put the top on
4) freeze it
5) bake whenever the feeling suits you

They made these in jars for ease of giving as gifts, but I would think you could also use a ramekin, if you have those lying around.

Delicious. I think I hear my sweet tooth calling.

Megalosaurus

Perhaps you’ve seen this; it’s been making the rounds recently. But if you ever have trouble deciding whether or not to eat something that falls on the floor, perhaps you should consult this handy guide.

One of the biggest benefits of this: I now have proof that my cat should not try to eat that emausaurus across the street, as she is definitely not a megalosaurus. She can be such a bully sometimes.
